Vocational Training Pathway to Residency Permit

Portugal offers non-EU nationals a unique opportunity to obtain a residence permit through enrollment in recognised vocational training programs, as stipulated under Article 92 of the Portuguese Immigration Law.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a residence permit under Article 92, applicants must:

Recognised by relevant educational authorities, including the Ministry of Education or the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).

Enrollment in Recognised Programs: Be enrolled in a vocational training course that is:

Registered with the Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations (DGERT).

Aligned with Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Accommodation: Provide proof of accommodation in Portugal.

Clean Criminal Record: Present a criminal record certificate from their country of origin or residence

These programs are designed to equip students with practical skills and are often offered in flexible formats, including online and part-time options, to accommodate diverse needs.

Post-Completion Opportunities

Post-Completion Opportunities

Upon completing a Level 4 vocational course, students may be eligible to transition from a student residence permit to a work or self-employment residence permit under Article 122(1)(o) of the Immigration Law.


Application Process

Applicants can initiate the residence permit process from their home country through the Portuguese consulate or within Portugal. Essential steps include:

  1. Course Enrollment: Secure admission to a recognised vocational training program.
  2. Document Preparation: Gather necessary documents, including proof of financial means, accommodation, and a clean criminal record.
